What Do You Need to Know to Get a Learner’s Permit in Colorado?

If you are a Colorado resident interested in getting a driver’s license for the first time, you may be wondering where to begin. At iGottadrive, we are your go-to resource for all things driver education. We offer online driving lessons that satisfy state requirements and keep you safe on the road. In this article, we’ll discuss what you need to know to get a learner’s permit and how we can help you reach your goals.

At What Age Can You Get a Permit?

In Colorado, you must be at least 15 years old to get a learner’s permit. There are two ways a 15-year-old can do this. Before age 15-and-a-half, you must first complete a driver education course totaling at least 30 hours of instruction. If you are between 15-and-a-half and 16 years old, you have two options. You must complete a 30-hour course or a 4-hour driver awareness program. For those 16 years of age or older, there is no course requirement.

If under the age of 18 years old, new drivers need a parent or guardian to sign an Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship. This document shows that the parent or guardian is legally responsible for the permit holder’s driving activities.

Regardless of age, all people with a learner’s permit must only drive with a sober, licensed driver in the front seat. Permit holders must also hold the permit for a full year before they are able to get a driver’s license.

What Do You Need to Learn?

In order to get a learner’s permit in Colorado, you need to learn the basics of safe, responsible driving. Learning all of the necessary information is a huge undertaking. In fact, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles produces an entire book with everything drivers need to know.

At iGottadrive, we take that information and turn it into helpful, engaging classes that will teach you everything you need to know. Here are some of the topics covered in our classes.

  • Laws about safe driving, keeping your driver’s license, and driving under the influence of alcohol
  • How to check a vehicle for safety concerns before driving
  • Signs and signals you will encounter on the road
  • Rules and best practices for parking
  • Driving on the freeway and in the mountains
  • What to do in case of emergency

These are just a few of the things you need to know to successfully pass a learner’s permit test. Our classes condense this information to make it fun to learn and easy to remember.
